Welcome New Writers!

Blogs are an amazing way to practice writing to share.  Participating in our class blog is a great way to exchange ideas and practice communicating digitally.

One of the greatest obstacles facing young writers is learning how to write without plagiarizing the work of other writers. In this post, I would love to share a great article from The New York Times about plagiarism, Are You Part of ‘Generation Plagiarism’? Read the article and share your thoughts.

i believe when people plagiarize other peoples work it is a sign of laziness and they don't care about what their work looks like or the effort they put into it.

my thoughts on plagiarism is that the person who plagiarizes is to lazy to do any of the work him/her self. Also it shows a lack of respect to the person who writes the article, book etc. because you are just taking their work. But on the other hand the students in the article were probably bad students who as i said were probably lazy.

  3. When someone plagiarizes I feel they lack originality and also don't put much effort into what they are doing. Technology sadly makes it easier to plagiarize.

  4. When people copy and paste other peoples thoughts and ideas it is called plagiarizing. It is a sign of laziness and a lack of work in young students. people who plagiarize want to get work over with so they can do something more entertaining.

  5. I agree that a lot of people don't realize that you have to cite sources when there is no author listed. Plagiarizing is
very serious and you are not giving credit to the person that did all the work.

  6. Plagerizing can get you in alot of trouble because your simply copying and pasting it on to the word document which shows laziness. Also, you wont know if that information is the right one so u can simply copy and paste it with the wrong information, giving you a zero...

  7. I think that plagiarizing is very serious. People who plagiarize are taking credit for another person's work. I think people plagiarize because they either do not know that it is wrong, or are lazy and do not care about what they are supposed to be writing about. I also think that students don't think that professors and teachers will check to see if they are plagiarizing, so they don't care.

  8. Plagerism is really serious, but sometimes it's hard to put things in your own words. I don't think it's terrible if you describe something using similar words, however, if you copy and paste sentences and paragraphs it's wrong. It's not fair to the original authors at all because they took their time to sit and write a well thought out article and in two seconds you can claim it's yours.

  9. Plagiarizing is taking credit for someone elses work. It's a sign of laziness from a person. I think students should change some of the words around and add some of their own ideas to the paper that they are writing. When students are plagiarizing, they are being dishonest. Also assignments that teachers give a student is to help them learn, not for them to copy from a person.

  10. Plagiarizing is a clear sign of laziness and disrespect. Credit should be given where it is due, and if students just copy work it shows that they are incompetent and are unreliable to do the work themselves. It is also rude to just take absolute credit for another persons hard work.

  11. Plagiarizing is for students who do not care enough to look up who wrote the work or who want to pass it as their own. It is getting more and more common, sometimes not even just writing but an actual project of some sort. I think that it is wrong for them not to give credit to the person and if they could not find the person listed, the least they could do is put Unknown Author and the website that they found it on.

  12. Although it is easier for the student to plagiarize another person's work, I think more enforcement should be placed on not doing it. When you plagiarize something, it's rude to the teacher and the author, since it's showing the teacher that you're lazy and have no time to write something yourself. I find kids who plagiarize highly disrespectful and if I were the author/a teacher I would have no tolerance for that.

  13. I agree with Lacey in the sense that as technology is getting more advanced, there are more ways to get information rather than using books and encyclopedias. It is easy for someone to just highlight text and click copy and paste instead of taking the time to come up with his or her own explanation or interpretation of the information. It is a sign of laziness and lack of effort.

  14. I definitely feel that plagiarizing is wrong because it is taking credit for someone else's thoughts and ideas. It is really important to cite the name of the author that the work is being taken from. Otherwise, it is disrespectful to the author, teacher and student. It's similar to stealing, therefore I understand why the punnishment for plagairizing is so harsh.

  15. Honestly, guys, everyone knows that it is wrong, but how many of you have ever taken the shortcut if you knew you weren't going to get caught? I'm pretty sure a lot of you plagiarize each other's work all the time. I'm talking about copying a friend's homework. Both scenarios are essentially the same thing. Okay, yes, writing a research paper is more difficult than a long-response answer to a homework question, but when you copy homework, it's the same show of laziness and unwillingness to think for yourself. Had anyone though of that?

Everyone knows that plaigarism is wrong, but as Cat said, who has honestly never done it at one point? You could have been doing it unknowingly, but still, you did it. You could have been working with a partner and copied their work because you were to lazy to do it yourself. I doubt there isn't a single person on this team who knows that it is wrong. Your taking all the credit for someone (wether a friend or an author) else's work. You didn't write it and yet your taking the credit for it.

  18. I feel like plagiarism is wrong. It shows what you are inside, someone who doesn't want to do any work and go the easy route in life. If your not trying to accomplish anything by yourself, or challenge yourself, whats the point of going to school or doing anything that you cant do yourself?

As we all know plagiarism is definitely wrong, and its punishment is a very serious and diserved one. Plagiarising is really just stealing, which we were all taught from a young age not to do. Then again, everyone has had a lazy moment and taken a sentence here or there from someone else's work.
I also agree with Lacey. Unfortunately, now with the click of a few buttons people can copy and paste anything. Also, with the vast amount of information on the internet it makes it harder for people to be caught plagiarising, unlike when our parents were in school and everyone just used encyclopedias.

  20. I am annoyed of "plagiarism is wrong." You guys almost all copied each others answers in hopes of giving a "socially acceptable" answer. That's kind of not really plagiarism but still. I really don't know why, but I am finding a lot of pleasure in reading the comments and seeing the grammar mistakes.

Unlike everyone else, I shall post a new perspective on the matter. I do indeed strongly agree that plagiarism is wrong, but there should also be more specific rules about it. If I just copy paste a wikipedia article, then that is plagiarism, but what if a statement is a fact. The sky is blue. Brownies are amazing. I really do not know if I will get punished for stating something like this just because it was in another article. I always sum articles, take notes, rephrase, and not copy paste things like a good boy, but I want to know exactly what defines it as "plagiarism." Only THEN shall I find the truth to the matter.
