Summer Reading

It seems like the only time I get to truly enjoy reading books is over the summer when I have much more free time on my hands.  (If you guys only knew how much time you take from my life! It's not just 8:30-4:00, I promise!)  Anyway, I'm downloading some books onto my Kindle, and I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for me. I like to keep up on what you are reading, too.

Just so you know:  yes, I'm a Harry Potter lover; I read the Twilight series, too, but that was my honestly weird obsession with vampires... the writing... well, it was pretty lackluster. (I'm being polite.)

Right now, I'm feeling completely nostalgic, and I'm reading the Sweet Valley Confidential by Francine Pascal which is the "adult" follow-up to the Sweet Valley High series which I started reading way back when. It's a light, easy read, and I'm not expecting much out of it.  I love, love, love Jodi Picoult (Sing You Home already on Kindle). I also enjoy historical fiction: The Red Tent and The Other Boleyn Girl being my favorites.  I'm kinda eclectic in my taste for novels. I like all the genres as long as the author can hook me.

I just downloaded:  This Is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper and Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen.  I'm now searching the NY Times Bestsellers list and also the top Kindle list.

I am truly interested in what you guys have read and enjoyed.  Let me know!

  5. There is this one book that I really enjoyed, even though it was super long. It was called World Without End, by I forget. I would recommend this to anyone, but you have to be able to get through it because it is like one thousand pages long. I'm not kidding.

  8. I would recommend the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson. They really get me hooked and I can't stop reading them. I'd recommend book one of the Gone series by Michael Grant, but the rest of the series, especially the third book, is a little slow.

  9. During the summer, I usually tackle the more ambitious reads that I can't cram into my schedule during the school year. My favorites:
1)I ABSOLUTELY, ABSOLUTELY adore The House of Spirits by Isabel Allende(a rare case in which the English translation is just as good as the original Spanish).
2)Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell is 960 pages of pure nirvana. No joke.
3)Azar Nefisi's Reading Lolita in Tehran = Literary Gold.
    4) I just downloaded Room by Emma Donoghue under fawning recommendations from book reviews and friends onto my Nook, Snooki. By the third page, I'm spellbound. :~)

  10. Hi, Mrs. Powers!
Currently, I am reading a nice, easy read, but I find it fascinating. The plot is something different than what I usually read, but I am loving how the author writes and what is happening (keep in mind, though, I haven't yet finished). It's called Luna by Julie Anne Peters. Also, Jeff Dunham's (if you don't know him, check him out; he's a ventriloquist/comedian) autobiography -- All By My Selves -- was a hilarious read! Great for car rides. You can force your children to read it to you while you drive. :)

  11. My favorite author right now is Ally Carter, she writes for "young adults" but unlike the other books in that section, the writing is quite flawless and her plots are classic yet original at the same time. I also enjoyed The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart, again, a young adult novel verging on dropping that first adjective.

The is one book I read called "Death Troopers". It is a Star Wars book, but that is not really the focus of the book. It is more about zombies. It is extremely suspenseful, and well written. It is an adult book, because there is a pretty large amount of gore, which makes some parts very hard to keep reading. Overall, it is an enthralling story.

  13. My favorite book that I have read recently was either Bossypants by Tina Fay, it was so funny. I literally could not stop laughing, she truly is an amazing write. Or the Messenger The Legacy of Mattie J.T. Stepanek and Heartsongs, by Jeni Stepanek. This book showed the world how one little boy could make a difference in so many lives. Mattie had a severe disease Muscular Dis trophy which in the end claimed his life, but his life did not go to waste, he helped many people, wrote 6 best selling books and poems, after his death he was even considered to be called a Saint in the Holy Catholic Church.

  14. So far my i have read many well written books and most of them have made me laugh. The best one so far that i have read was the catcher in the rye which was a book that really related to me and have to say that it has to be the only book that i wanted to read on my free time.

  15. Hmmmm. This is a hard question, because I loooove reading! :) I'd have to say that my favourite genres are historical fiction and fantasy.

Here are some of my favourite books in each genres:

    Historical fiction:
~Number the Stars by Lois Lowry - This book is about the Holocaust and how two best friends (one Jewish, one Christian) struggled to cope with all the changes
~The President's Daughter by Kimberly Bradley - This book is about how Ethel Roosevelt adjusts to life after her father Theodore Roosevelt becomes president.
~The Diary of Anne Frank by... (you guessed it!) Anne Frank - The title's self-explanatory, haha.

    Fantasy:
    ~Harry Potter. Enough said. <3
~The 39 Clues series - This series is about two siblings who travel around the world collecting "clues" to put together a powerful serum. (*This is one of those series' that you can't describe; You just have to read it!)
~Kane Chronicles - This series is about two siblings who... okay, well, again, I can't do it justice over the computer. JUST READ IT!
*Oh, and by the way, Daniel, Book 2 of the Kane Chronicles IS out. It came out May 3, and is called "The Throne of Fire." Amaaazing sequel! :)

One last thing to add: even after saying how these are my favourite genres, I will pretty much read ANY book as long as it looks interesting. In our agendas, there's a little corner of the page called, "Read Me", which lists some good books to read. I've already gone through my entire agenda and made little check marks and "x"s next to the ones I want/don't want to read. Not to mention I can literally spend HOURS on the library's virtual catalogue home page, looking at new releases and NYT bestsellers. Can't wait until summer, so that I can (finally) read in peace, without my mom telling me to study instead and that "books are only to be read in summer!" ;)

  16. I almost forgot! There's this book I have on hold at the library called "The President's Daughter". And, NO, it's not the same one I mentioned above. This one is by Ellen Emerson White. And the main character's last name is Powers! Hahaha, I was just searching up "The President's Daughter" to find the author and I saw this one, and read the synopsis. And this just made my day XD

  18. One of my favorite books is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I thought it was amazing! Another great book is Twilight by Stephanie Meyers. I have an Amazon Kindle, which by the way is so much better than a nook, and I have found a lot of great books in the Kindle Store. One of them is Songs of a Teenage Nomad by Kim Culbertson. It is a really great book to read.

  21. Hey, before I say anything else. Don't read past the first Hunger Games books. The last two SUCK. That being said, you should check out Suzanne Collins first series: The Underland Chronicles. The first book is Gregor the Overlander. The series is kinda like the Hunger Games, but a lot more awesome, a little quirkier, and not as full of romantic crap.

This book, Temping (Yes, Temping, no p.) Fate is also pretty good.

Besides that, I can't come up with anything.

  22. Hey Mrs. Powers, maybe start a thread about books NOT to read? I can offer one and a half (good ones):
The Bear and the Dragon by Tom Clancy
No Exit by Jean Paul Sartre [Only an eighteen page play, but it qualifies as a good book]

  23. Hate List by Jennifer Brown

  24. Hey Mrs. Powers. I have to read three books for school next year. They are, "Alas, Babylon," "A history of the World in 6 Glasses," and "Oliver Twist." It sounds like a lot of fun right? Anyway, I hope you are having a good summer!

  25. You've probably already read it, but The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. For those who don't know it. It's a book about the Holocaust told from a very unique perspective. I especially loved it because the ending wasn't predictable nor cliche.
