The Hunger Games Trilogy: OMG

I'll admit that I was slow to catch on to this series.  I mean, I remember seeing last year's students cradling the book in their arms and sneaking minutes to read it during my class.  I will also admit that I completely understand their obsession.  I started reading The Hunger Games last Wednesday, and I just finished Mockingjay yesterday.

Wow.  What a story.  In fact, I can't stop thinking about it.  I can't get Katniss and Peeta and Prim and Gale and even Finnick (I grew attached to him) out of my head.

I don't want spoilers for those who haven't read this series because you all should.  Immediately.  In fact, I want to teach this series.  Seriously.  If I can get a sponsor to purchase a class set, I would teach it tomorrow because the themes presented begged to be discussed.

I do want to discuss it with those of you who did read all three books because I'm in desperate need of a debriefing.  Here's the deal, if you read the series and want to participate in a discussion, join me on Goodreads.com. I created a special group just for us to discuss this book.  Look me up, and I will add you to the group.

Oh, and here's a official trailer to the movie.  If you haven't read the book yet, this is amazingly similar to the book.  Maybe it will motivate you to READ!

ps - What should I read next?

  1. I haven't read it and don't understand the craziness. Just other "Twilight" to me. Is it really worth the read?

  2. Oh, Lacey, yes. This is NO Twilight. Yes, I read the Twilight series. Mostly, I was intrigued with the entire vampire thing. The writing was not good.

I would be more willing to compare The Hunger Games series to the Harry Potter series except I don't think there is a contemporary young adult author who can compare to JK Rowling. However, the idea of the world Collins created and the situations and themes that evolve from her ideas are amazing. Yes, it is worth the read. Read ALL THREE. Then we talk in detail. :)

  4. Before you read all three, read Gregor the Overlander, and the other four books that follow it. They are also by Suzanne Collins, and never received the attention they deserved. In my opinion, MUCH better, and less commercial. (The romance in Hunger Games gets cheesy.)

  5. Cat - No spoilers here! Let's discuss on Goodreads. I have opinions!!!

  6. Gregor the Overlander was a wonderful novel. I enjoyed reading it. Although, I must admit, the Hunger Games have much more imagery :P As for the romance, well, isn't that what most people look for in series? Haha, just joking.

  7. Whoa. I just realized my name is still set to when I had Mrs. Powers as a teacher. Yay!

  8. I thought the trilogy was wonderful as well. I liked the books so much that I think that we should have a field trip to watch the movie. Everyone would enjoy this trip, including you Mrs. Powers, ;). The movie is probably going to be one of the very few movies that is as descriptive as the actual book.

I read the Hunger Games series, and I have to say, they are probably some of the most amazing books I've ever read. I absolutely loved the series; each book was filled with suspense and scenes that had my heart racing in anticipation. I became addicted to these books as I was reading them and couldn't put them down until I was finished. There was something unexpected in practically every chapter. I can honestly say that this series was some of the best writing I've ever read.

Also, Mrs. Powers, if you're still looking for some other bookay to read, there are some books I've read recently that I thought were pretty good:
-The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare (City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass, City of Fallen Angels)
-The Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare (Clockwork Angel, Clockwork Prince)
    -Clarity by Kim Harrington
    -Delirium by Lauren Oliver
-Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

I also just bought a bunch of new books on my book, so after I read them, i'll post another comment if any of them were particularly good. :)

  10. I am always reading and getting new books on my Kindle almost every other day. It is very rare that I do not like what I read, however, The Hunger Games was one of the few books that I could not read. I read the first one and part of the second one, but I did not see what everyone is so obsessed about. However, I do feel that the movie will be interesting to watch (and possibly a fun field trip!).

  11. I am absolutely thrilled that you liked the book Mrs.Powers! It's a great series, and I already have my midnight premiere tickets for the movie. I'd like to join the group, but I'm having some trouble finding it. What did you name it?
I started reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson recently, and have not been able to put it down. However, it is a crime thriller, so some of the themes and scenes are not, per-say, "class appropriate." If you do like that kind of book though, I strongly suggest you read it.

  12. @Kendra, I just added you to the group. :) Can't wait to hear what you think. I did read all of The Girl with... series. I found the first book difficult to get through at the beginning, but after about 1/3 of the way through novel, I couldn't put it down.

@Everyone else, look me up on GoodReads to discuss the Hunger Games. I did try to get a field trip together, but we are too close to FCAT, so the request was DENIED. Bummer. :(

  13. I love this series. I am halfway through the second book. I think the second is better than the first and can't wait to read the third one. It is rare for me to really want to read a book. I didn't want to stop reading these once I started.

  14. Oh my gosh, I am obsessed! This is the new Twilight for me. I am on Catching Fire now and I seriously cannot put it down. Hopefully I'll be done with all three by the end of spring break. I was so excited when I went to Broward Mall and met Alexander Ludwig and Jennifer Lawrence. Now I tell everyone I met Cato and Katniss! I can't wait for the movie to come out! How do we join your group on Goodreads? I tried looking it up but I could not find it.

  15. I haven't decided weather I should read the Hunger Games but I might give it a shot. What aspect of the book makes it so interesting to read? How long does the book take to read? Should I take the time to read the book?

    ReplyDelete
  16. @Jake - YES, you should read the novel. The story itself is an interesting concept. This country where the citizens are punished by being forced to fight to the death as a penalty from an uprising. I personally enjoyed learning about the characters and seeing how this world impacted their lives. As far as how long it takes to read, it depends on how "fast" you read. I read the entire series in four days because I couldn't put the books down, but that's me. Everyone is different. READ IT!

I came across the books by accident last year. It was DEAR day, I had forgotten my book, and I asked my friend if he had a book I could borrow for first period. He handed me "The Hunger Games", and even though I only had one hour to get into the book, I found it really interesting. I asked my friend if I could borrow it for the weekend. It proved to be a GREAT book. I absolutely loved it, and I could not put it down. I read the second book soon after; I absolutely loved that book as well. However, I got the third book for Christmas last year, and I've found it really hard to get into (which is unusual because I read a lot). It's been a year, and I still haven't made it past chapter three. Now that the books are getting so popular, I figure I should probably finish it up soon.
Regardless, I think the books are phenomenal, but there are a few aspects of the plot that I question. For example, how are the kids surviving in this arena? They're running around and fighting on a very short supply of water. There are a few other things I question, but I don't want to give any spoilers. :p

I recently read the first book of the series and was completely obsessed with it. During classes, even when the teachers were teaching, I was still reading. This is really rare for me because I absolutely hate reading, but this book was different. I haven't had time to start the second one yet but I know I will soon. The book is amazing and I have heard great things about the second one. I can't wait until the movie.

I read the first book at camp last summer when my friend asked me to hold it while she went in the lake. I started reading it because i got bored and immediately became enticed by it. I'm completely obsessed with the series now. I think i have read all three books 20 times each. I already have my tickets for the midnight premire of the movie. The books are completely amazing, and i believe we should read them in class.

  21. OH MY GOSH. These books are perfect. The Hunger Games trilogy has made me a reading psycho. I have never ever read a better book series, and I'm completely obsessed. For those who have not read it, I 100% encourage you to read it.

I've wanted to read the books because I've heard such amazing things about them. The commercial for the movie looks really intense also, I'd like to see it.

  23. I found that I really don't like to read because I never seem to find the right book. However, I think I am going to borrow the Hunger Games from a friend. From all the comments, it seems like it's amazing. Can't wait to start reading!
