A Haiku Tribute to Jonas

Last year, a magnificent student began an email haiku extravaganza with me.  It was amazing. We wrote I don't know how many emails back and forth all written completely in haiku.  I love the creativity, love of words, and images in this idea.  In Jonas's honor, my next post is a haiku.

Lounging by the sea,
My mind wanders aimlessly.
Pure relaxation.

Post your own haiku.  Any topic. (No copycats like the top ten debacle.) Even respond to a haiku previously posted. (Cat, you are great at that.)

Can't wait to read them!

  11. I can not stand it,
    Poems are so boring to
    read and write them. Cookies.

    I'm in the big school
    library doing homework,
    don't procrastinate.

This is off topic but I just remembered Mrs. Newman's Jaberwaky poem:

Twas brilling, and the slithy toves did gire and gimble in the wabe, all mimsy were the borogrove, and the momewrats at grabe. Beware the jaberwok my son, the jaws the claws that smatch, beware the jub jub bird and shun the frumios bandesnatch. He took his vorbal sword in, long time the long time th manxome foe he sought,
so rested he by the tum tum tree and stood a while in thought. And as in uffish thought he stood the jaberwock with eyes of flame came wiffling through the tugley wood and burbled as it came. One two one two the vorpal blade went snicker snack, he left it dead and wit it's head he went galumphing back. And has thou slayed the jabberwock come to my arms my beamish boy. O frabjus day calloh callay. He chortled in his joy. Twas brilling, and the slithy toves did gire and gimble in the wabe, all mimsy were the borogrove, and the momewrats at grabe.

  12. The haiku* above
    Made me nauseous. Then again,
    Who am I to judge?

    Jonas, however,
Is truly a king of the
    Almighty haiku.

    That the plural of haiku
    Is haiku, as well?

    Posting on this blog.

  13. Hey, Mrs. Powers
    Great, creative blog posting
    Hope you get a laugh

    You might chuckle now
    At your students's expense
    Oh well, so will we!

    At first, so confused.
    What are they talking about?
    My mind in a haze

    My very thoughts were:
    Never am I going to
    Write such a haiku

    Yet, here I am now
    Accomplishing that hard task
    Where is my medal?

    Just kidding around!
Hope you have a great weekend!
    See you on Monday

  23. You all realize that haikus are not necessarily the strict five-seven-five syllable pattern, right? Many other haikus define the seventeen japanese on by letters. The Japanese themselves realize that 17 of their on last for about 12 english syllables. The definition of a haiku, according to the Haiku Society of America,is "a short poem that uses imagistic language to convey the essence of an experience of nature or the season intuitively linked to the human condition."

    ReplyDelete
  24. @KevinK806 I had heard that, but, then again, the way they teach it to us at school really is the five- seven- five syllable pattern. I guess it's just easier, too. My definition of a short poem can be different than yours and if not, everyone else would have pretty different poems.

  25. So what, Kevan "Kay"?
    I love the traditional.
    Don't confuse children.

    As great as that is,
I want to write them this way.
    Let us continue.

    I am filled with bliss.
    Everyone is partaking
    In this writing form.

    I feel oh so touched.
That came out kind of wrong, no?
    Don't twist my haiku!

    XP

    There is just one thing:
Most of you botched up the form.
    Note the five-seven-five.

    All terrors aside,
    This is thoroughly pleasing.
    I hope to spy more.

    Your vernacular
    Should start getting much better
    If you use good words.

    Don't follow that one.
Good is not part of your best
    Vocabulary.

    It is time to glue!

    My computer now glitters!
    My hands are sticky.

    Procrastinating.
    Glitter drips from the ceiling.
    Going to wash up.

    I'm going to die,
For my parents will kill me!
    Now I need a hose.

    This has gone awry.
    What was I writing about?
    Everything sparkles.
