I Can't Play Scrabble

Facebook is down. Usually that wouldn't matter to me too much, but it means I can't play Scrabble.  *Sad* I don't have any papers to grade. *Happy* My kids are all too busy to play with me. *Bored*

It's official. I'm a Scrabble addict. I have known this for some time... just ask my previous students; they know it, too.  Every once in a while, I'm still shocked by this addiction although I guess it could be worse. This is a healthy addiction.  ;-) --- On a side note, "addiction" has such a negative connotation. Is there a word that means the same thing with a more positive connotation? I couldn't find one...

I found this article and thought I would share. It's old but still relevant to me. Meanwhile: Addicted to L-U-V

Do you have any healthy addictions?

For a healthy addiction, I have blogging. Since my parents are usually too busy taking care of my brother, and my phone keeps running out of battery very frequently, I need to talk about something. Also, when I have to do some computer homework, like FCAT Explorer, I get bored after doing so many passages and questions and vocabulary, so I come here, and if there's no new post (there seems to be no end now!), I go to Yahoo, make a malevolent comment about something, and I cause a stir, and I just find it funny.

But Ms.Powers, is there any teacher that you play Scrabble against at Falcon Cove? Just curious.

I'm flattered that you creep over to my blog while bored. Excellent.

Of course I play Scrabble against other teachers! Mr. Bryant and Mr. Keery are constant competitors. I also play against Mrs. Orband when she's not too chicken. Ms. Edwards's husband plays against me, too! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE all the competition.

  3. ps - Half the fun of playing against Mr. Keery and Mr. Bryant comes in creating interesting titles for our games and trying to incorporate fun new words. Mr. Bryant's favorite from last year: jacquard. Ask him about it.

  4. Well, I am addicted to several things, most of them are not "healthy". I guess that my healthiest addiction is probably ping pong. I really like it. I'm not really sure why but it's just fun. I have been playing at a friends house but today i finally got my own table. I can't wait to set it up. By the way Mrs. Powers, I hear that you lost to Jason Canter in Scrabble. Any thoughts?

  5. The only real addiaction I have is to a british car show caller "Top Gear" on BBC America. It is so funny and messed up. One time they were trying to see if the Toyota trucks (you know, the ones that hold all of the African coup people who drive around in with there machine guns)can be destroyed, they drove one into a wall at 60mph and it still survived, the only thing that killed it was a stick of dinomite in the engine block. Also, I religously watch 60 Minutes (especailly Andy Rooney) and Jeopardy, but I despise Trebeck.

  6. I'm not very good at playing board games (I'm better at video games...), but I'd love to play Scrabble with you and practice!
And as for being obsessed, I think that would be the Disney animations for me.

  7. I think that Scrabble is fun but I'm not very good at it because I can't spell, but it is fun to try. Even though I can't play scrabble though I love to play any board games or any card game for that matter.
For being addicted, I think that I love to read books, and take them to seriously to the extreme.

  8. This is a total girl thing, but I'm addicted to Glee! I love watching the show and listening to the songs on Youtube. I'm a total Gleek!

Also, I'm addicted to playing soccer. I love when the weekend comes because I know that I'll finally have time to play. During the week I'm busy with school and homework, so it's awesome when I can just go out and play.

I wish I could play Scrabble, but I stink at that game! Every time I've ever played Scrabble, I've always lost. Anyway, like Samantha said it would be good practice to play against you.

  9. Sami - I think "obsession" may be a better word than "addiction" though it still has a slightly negative connotation, but it is better than "addiction," don't you think?

I welcome any new competition to a Scrabble game. Start one up. Game on.

@ Kevin - That game is NOT over yet, and last I checked, I was winning: Jason (308) Me (323). Just saying... It's a good game. Jason is great competition!

  10. Scrabble always was a pleasant game. The only problem might be that I get bored after some time. My opponents either crush me or take forever.

My addiction would have to be checking the news and internet. I MUST check Yahoo, CNN, and other sites to learn what's happening around the world. In such a peaceful community like Weston, there is really never action. I even try to search news sites in other languages.

  11. I've never really liked Scrabble or any board games; I usually get board (intended pun...haha) of them after a while. I think I'm addicted to Facebook and chatting, like any teen, but it's definitely a bad addiction. I tell myself that I'll only be on for a few minutes, and the next thing you know, thirty minutes have passed, and I haven't even started my homework. Also, when I finally exit out of Facebook, I get back on twenty minutes later. Although this unhealthy obssession isn't conflicting with my grades, I don't get that much sleep because I'm up until late at night. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do to control my addiction?

Mrs. Powers, I definitely agree that what you have with Scrabble is an obssession, not an addiction. At least you're working your brain(:

  12. I never really liked Scrabble. It is fun but I cannot understand why you would pick it over chess or something! Scrabble is definitely a healthy addiction, though.Anyways, I have a lot of habits, ie: Call of Duty, Facebook, Texting, but they aren't obsessions. ANDDDDD: I heard Jason beat you in Scrabble, but from reading the comments it is still on. One thing I am a bit OCD about though is I absolutely need to make sure I did all my homework Sunday Night. I'll look on my teachers' websites and everything. But, that is a good habit.

  13. Addictions, obsessions, whatever you want to call them...........I don't think I have any, healthy or otherwise. As for finding a synonym for "addiction" with a positive correlation, I couldn't. Still, people say, "I'm addicted to...." all the time, so the word is starting to lose it's strength and negativity.

PS- Mrs. Powers, I have two things to say:

1.) How do I challenge you to a game of Scrabble?
2.) If you ever have dreams where people turn into dancing scrabble pieces (like the author of the article did), find a therapist. That's when you'll know your obsession's gone too far.

  14. Sorry, I meant connotation not correlation in the last posting.

  15. I guess my healthy addiction would be playing soccer. I am very competitive about it. Every time that a friend comes over that plays soccer, I ask if they want to play.
Other than that, I am not really addicted to anything (at least not a healthy addiction).

  16. Hmmmmm... an addiction? I'm guessing it would have to be the yearbook website. Being in journalism for the second year, I know the website where we design the yearbook pages like the back of my hand. Just ask any second-year-er and they'll say that they easily find themselves on it in the wee hours of the morning. I could easily spend about five hours on the darn website. It's like electronically scrap booking!
If only I could show you.....
Even though it's very tedious work, (having to rotate, drag, copy, upload pictures, create all the figures out of other tiny little shapes) I find it fun and I'm playing an active role in our school.

  17. Hello, I'm Victoria Baram and I'm a facebook addict.
Ever since I got my facebook, I became addicted. Even though this should be about my positive addictions, other than my friends, I don't really have any healthy addictions. Also, I'm definitely addicted to my phone and texting. It's actually pretty bad. Last month, I sent about 8,000 texts. Board games don't exactly appeal to me other than "Sorry." I remember when I was younger we used to have "Sorry night" and as a family, we would all play and It was pretty fun. Now, sadly, we don't play it anymore . ): Honestly, I've never even played Scrabble before. :P

  18. My addiction would be facebook and texting. That is my biggest problem. Ever since I got my first cell phone and received my facebook, i am on them 24/7. Everywhere I go, "Do I have my cell phone." Coming home from school everyday, "Log on to Facebook." It has even become so bad that when I wake up at 4:30 am to go skating, I check facebook. This is because I know my friends discuss a lot of things while I am sleeping. (And I dont want to miss oout!!!) Haha, pretty bad right?!!? I mean, that is just ridiculous. I wouldn't say that I have any unhealthy addictions like drugs or anything, LOL. I am addicted to eating celery. Stupid, but yes. I have to eat at least one piece a day or else I spaz out. It's just like a part of my day, "Did I eat my celery yet." Yes, I am weird. Whatever, just being honest!

I love scrabble! I loved playing it in your class too! I like many board games, but facebook and texting and other things appeal to me much more.

  19. I would have to say my addiction is reading and playing on my iTouch. Reading is obviously a healthy habit, but an excessive amount of playing on my iTouch can (and probably will) lead to lower grades/less sleep, which I CANNOT live without. I also really like going on Facebook, because I just got one pretty recently (September) but lately I've learned that Facebook is a surefire way to lower grades by at least 10%...
Other things I like to do A LOT, but not as much as the stuff I listed above are:
    -Go shopping
    -Eat (Haha... :P)
-Play sports (usually ones I suck at)
-Go ice skating (either with my friends or by myself..... Reminds me of home!!! :D)
-Watching TV (SpongeBob SquarePants ;) )
    -Watching movies (National Treasure)

  20. I'd say that my healthy addiction is to play outside and move around because I hate staying still. As for the search for a postive synonym for addiction one could say interest.

  21. I've never actually played the game scrabble. It looks like a lot of fun,but I've never played it. However, I do have an addiction to reading. Once I start to read a book, I can't stop reading it. I tell my self, "Just one more chapter. just one more." Next thing you know,it's 4:30 in the morning and I finished my book. Yeah, my mom actually took away my books for a week. I was not a happy camper, but I did get a lot more sleep. I kind of made up a little saying, "A book a day keeps the tutor away." Lol, but it's true, books make you smarter. Unless you're reading Captain Undepants, then you're just wasting your time.

  22. Well... something I'm obsessed with might be crafting and decorating things. I believe that is the only thing I'm constantly doing. I am not very good at being obsessed with things, considering I usually only go on my Facebook during the weekends. I also text quite a bit... but it is usually one ongoing conversation with the same people. Well, that's pretty much it!

  23. My favorite part about your class was and always will be scrabble, especially your creative way for pointing out my group (Kyle, Christian, and Nico) was in trouble. Thank you for preparing me for highschool Mrs. Powers, I miss your class and I will never forget it.

  24. Hey Mrs. Powers,
I have several "addictions" such as FACEBOOK, texting, chatting, calling, formspring stalking, etc. I also love playing board games although I haven't had much time recently to play them. I am not that good at Scrabble, but I would like to get better at it. Can I add you as a friend on facebook so that I can challenge you to a game? Bring it on!

  26. I would say that I have many addictions, both healthy and unhealthy. Because I love doing them all, they usually balance each other out. Does that mean that they are all healthy? To name a few of the healthier obsessions, there's ballet, reading, Sparklife (if you haven't been on this website, you must look it up immediately), chatting/posting/commenting on gmail, and, most recently, yoga.

As for scrabble, I don't think I could play. It seems like a fun game, but I cannot spell to save my life. No, seriously. Ask anyone who knows me. I dread spelling tests to the point of hyperventilation. Hopefully the yoga will help with this........

  27. Just a quick question... Do you and Mr. Bryant brag to each other about scrabble? If so, who has bragging rights now? Haha I would play scrabble but I fear my terribleness would bring down my grade.

  28. @ Max -- Of course we brag! I can't believe you have to ask who has the bragging rights. Who do you THINK does?

Playing Scrabble with me will NEVER bring down your grade; it will only help you learn new words and game strategy. :)

  29. I am an addict to Scrabble too. I play you Mrs. Powers. You said you play Mrs. Newman in scrabble. Do you or Mrs. Newman win more? Who tends to brag more?

  31. My Healthy addiction would be a game on my phone called, "Cubes." I honestly barely ever touch any other games because to frank, this is the only one I know how to play. I used to be really into a computerized version of solitaire but I had to quit because my brother started to make fun of me and tell his friends. :/

  32. I have many addictions many of them not healthy including addiction to chocolate ext. but I'm also addicted to reading so I do have my healthy addictions. I think that everyone is addicted to something, my brother, for example is addicted to video games.
